Hornets Take Out Tigers in KCI Tourney

After coming up 2 points short in the first round against Lathrop, Penney comes back with a 6 point victory over Plattsburg in the consolation bracket of the KCI Tournament at Hamilton.

The Hornet's Telly Harper gets the opening tip to Jaran Richman who layed it in for the first points of the contest. With 2:40 left in the first quarter, Penney's Latroy Harper turned an ankle and would not return in the quarter which ended in an 18-18 tie.

Latroy returned with 5:17 left in the second quarter and the Hornets trailing 18-23. He soon was able to get loose for a dunk and scored the final 2 points in the second quarter with a tip in at the buzzer for a 30-23 Hamilton lead at the half.

With the score 37-34 and the 3rd quarter coming to an end, Latroy stole the ball under the basket in the front court and made a reverse lay up for a 39-34 Hornet lead heading into the final 8 minutes of play. The game was tied at 39 with 5:42 to go, but Penney out scored the Tigers 8 to 2 the rest of the way for a 47-41 Hamilton victory.

Latroy led the Hornets with 16 points while adding 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Brother Telly was next with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist. Jaran Richman and Mason McFall each finished with 7 points and Korby Ford had 4. Richman led the team in rebounds with 11, assists with 4, blocked shots with 2, plus 1 steal. McFall snared 4 rebounds, and Ford rebounded the ball twice, assisted on 2 buckets, and stole the ball once. Wesley Pratt added 1 rebound and 1 assist, and Andy Ernat grabbed 1 rebound. Tanner Sims led the Tigers with 12 points. Penney made 15 of 31 2-point field goal attempts, but hit only 3 of 16 from beyond the arc, and 8 of 15 free throw attempts.

Hamilton played for the consolation trophy on Thursday night.
