Flimflam

Fellow Americans,

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is an unaffordable debacle. Former President Barack Obama promised us, “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor” and “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.” He also said Obamacare would lower every family’s health care premiums by up to $2,500 each year, not raise taxes, and not increase our national debt. Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the House, told us how great Obamacare was going to be, but when asked about specifics she infamously said, “We have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it.” Now that we know what was in the Obamacare bill, we know why it was fast-tracked through a Democratic-controlled Congress in the middle of the night without any Republican support! Yes, it was all flimflam!

Now, let us fast forward to the present where the Republicans control Congress. Republican President Donald Trump is presenting a “new and improved” health care plan. The American Health Care Act (Trumpcare) is supposed to improve care and lower costs, all while covering people with pre-existing medical conditions. If Trumpcare is really this good, why aren’t all Republicans united behind it? Why is Trump sending out his bully-boys (Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan) to coerce Republican opponents into supporting this bill? Why won’t Trump and company provide details of this bill to the public? Ironically, the House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi now demands to know the details of Trumpcare, stating, “We have a right to know what’s in the health care bill before it passes.” For once I agree with the queen of hypocrisy! Too bad members of Congress and President Trump don’t have to live with the same health care plan as the rest of us!

Government-run health care is neither efficient nor effective, as demonstrated by the Medicare, Medicaid, VA, and Obamacare programs. The federal government’s role in our health care should be minimal. It should establish simple guidelines and then step back to let the private market address our health care needs. We should be able to buy our health insurance like we buy auto insurance, life insurance, and homeowner’s insurance. Most of all, we should never be compelled by our government to buy something we don’t want! May God bless you and the United States of America!
