Kid's Fishing Day in Hamilton

by Hamilton Police Chief, Ron Faulkner

On May 28, 2016, our 11th annual Kid’s Fishing Day, and my last Kid’s Fishing Day due to my retirement, was held at the Hamilton Reservoir. A special thank you goes to all the sponsors and volunteers who participated over the years. At approximately 8:30 a.m. children began arriving. The temperature began rising and the children kept coming. This year we had 127 children participating, which was the largest number of kids to date attending this fun day for kids and adults alike. Previous years had numbers of children ranging from 64 to 126.

Sign in started about 9:00 a.m. and the event wound down about 1:00 p.m. Upon sign in each kid receives a ticket for the drawing of prizes. While the kids fished, the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department was busy cooking hotdogs and other volunteers were putting the prizes on display. Around 11:00 a.m. lunch was served. There were plenty of hotdogs, chips, cold drinks, and cookies for everyone. Immediately after lunch, tickets were drawn for the prizes. As each ticket number was drawn, that ticket holder could choose one prize from the display. There were plenty of prizes to be drawn with most kids receiving two fishing related prizes. As usual, the kids were very excited during the drawings for the prizes.

Kid’s Fishing Day is an annual community event for the children ages 15 years and under, and for many of us adult aged kids. This day is just for the kids. This event would not be possible without the support of the community, donations received from businesses and individuals, time and effort donated by the Missouri Department of Conservation, Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department, City of Hamilton Public Works, Hamilton Police Department, all volunteers, parents, grandparents and friends who brought the children to this event. Many of you have participated in all 11 of these yearly events. We thank you very much for your continued support and participation.

I hope someone will continue this event for the kids in the coming years.
