Qualifying seniors - don’t miss this great opportunity to save $2,500!
High school seniors whose parent or legal guardians are telephone, Internet, or video customers of Green Hills Companies have the opportunity to win a $2,500 scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by Green Hills Companies and the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS). FRS will fund $2,000 of the scholarship, with Green Hills funding the additional $500.
The student must reside in our service area with parent or legal guardian and be enrolled in a two or four-year accredited college, university or trade/vocational school. You must have at least a C grade point average (2.0) and express an interest to return to rural America following graduation. The student’s parent or guardian must be a customer of Green Hills Companies.
Materials to be included in the application packet are: three copies of a completed application form, a 300-word essay, a high school transcript, an educator’s recommendation, and an additional letter of recommendation. Choose from one of the following topics for your 300-word essay: 1) Describe your most significant accomplishment, and explain why you believe it to be your most outstanding. 2) Describe the community in which you live, and indicate how it has influenced the person you are. 3) What industry or opportunity would entice you to return to a rural community after completing your education, and why? You may submit an original application, a photocopy of the form, or download the form from www.frs.org.
Three of the completed packets must be turned into the Green Hills office by February 19, 2016, for verification and signatures. Green Hills will then mail 2 of those packets back to the student the following week. Students will be responsible for mailing those complete application packages to FRS by March 1, 2016. Mail them to: Scholarship Selection Committee, Foundation for Rural Service, 4121 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 1000, Arlington, VA 22203.
In the event an eligible student in the Green Hills service area is not chosen for one of the 30 FRS Scholarships, Green Hills will sponsor a $500 scholarship for the same group of seniors. This scholarship will be judged by a panel using the same criteria as the FRS Scholarship. Green Hills will retain the third copy of your application packet for this scholarship opportunity.
The purpose for the College Scholarship Program is to help further higher education among rural youth. Scholarships are intended to offer young people from rural areas a better chance to receive a higher education. Another objective of the Scholarship Program is to encourage college graduates to return to rural areas after graduation. More than two-thirds of rural Americans with postsecondary degrees never return to their rural communities.
Application forms are available at your school or the Green Hills office. For more information, call Sherryl at 1-800-846-3426 or 644-5411.
