Alma Rae (Benney) Greenwood
Alma Rae (Benney) Greenwood, age 95, a former resident of Breckenridge, MO, passed away on Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at the Englewood Meridian in Denver, CO.
Alma Rae was born the daughter of John Harland and Dollie Eldora (Frith) Benney on Nov. 2, 1921, in Breckenridge. She was united in marriage to Charles Naason Greenwood on Aug. 13, 1950, in Breckenridge. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 2011.
Alma Rae was a 1938 graduate of Breckenridge High School and earned her Teaching Certificate at Central Missouri State Teacher College in 1942. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in 1949 from Central Missouri State University, and later earned her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Denver, and her Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
She and Charles lived in Denver, CO, where they both taught in the Denver Public School System. Alma Rae taught third grade in her own classrooms; and she taught first, second, and third grade content on Denver’s KRMA-TV Channel 6. Her TV lessons were watched for 14 years in classrooms all over Denver.
After retiring, Alma Rae joined the education service organization, P.E.O., where she held many offices and helped promote scholarships to Cottey College in Nevada, MO. Retirement also gave her the time to pursue her love of photography in her beautiful Colorado Mountains.
Alma Rae is survived by her brother, Joe Benney of Chicago, IL and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Wesley Benney; sister, Martha Benney Hargrove; one nephew; and her many beloved sisters and brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. A scheduled family visitation will be held at the church on Friday, Dec. 2, one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe on Thursday, Dec. 1, from noon until 6:00 p.m. and again on Friday, Dec. 2, at the church from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Breckenridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles N. and Alma Greenwood College Scholarship Fund, and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, MO 64601.
