Dixie Lee Pence

Dixie Lee Pence, age 88, a resident of Braymer, MO, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City.

Dixie was born on Jan. 24, 1931, in Jamesport, to Alvis “Short” and Grace (Dixon) Pliley. She graduated from Jamesport High School in 1949, and Caster’s Beauty Academy in 1950. She operated a beauty shop in Gallatin until 1953. On Dec. 24, 1952, she married Roger Pence. They moved to Braymer in 1953 and opened Dixie’s Beauty Shop, where she worked for 65 years. She also did hair at the Golden Age Nursing Home when it opened until she retired in 2017 for health reasons. 

Dixie was a member of the Braymer Methodist Church in Braymer, where she was very active in United Methodist Women, and the Round Table Sunday School class. She was also a member of the Braymer Tweedie-Murray American Legion Post 117 Women’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include one daughter, Candy Barth (Sam) of Weatherby Lake; one grandson, Aaron Calton and friend Cynthia; one granddaughter, Amber Calton and friend Jesse Tye; four great-grandchildren, Ian and Hannah Cooper, Demi Calton, and Jordan Gillenwater; one brother, Jerry Pliley of Jamesport; one cousin, Bob Dixon (Carolee) of Lock Springs; one nephew, Bart Pliley (Brenda) of Jamesport; one niece, Julie Levey (Rob) of Carlisle, PA; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger; her best friend for 76 years, Mary Clevenger; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Pliley.

A memorial service will be held at the Braymer Methodist Church in Braymer on Monday, Nov. 25, at 10:00 a.m. There is no scheduled visitation. Friends may call at the Lindley Pitts Funeral Home in Braymer on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Inurnment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Braymer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Braymer Methodist Church, and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P. O. Box 47, Chillicothe, MO 64601.
