Hornets win basketball opener

Coach Rick Ross and his Hamilton Hornets, fresh off a State Football Championship, hosted the North Mercer Cardinals in the Penney High season basketball opener last Thursday.

The Cardinals led 14-11 at the end of one quarter, but Penney High took a 31-22 lead to the locker room. Hamilton extended their lead 43-31 entering the final quarter, and went on to a 61-50 victory. The Hornets displayed a balanced scoring attack with Latroy Harper leading four Hamilton players in double digit scoring with 17. Wesley Pratt hit two 3-pointers, and 2 of 2 free throws, on his way to a 16 point night and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jaran Richman scored 13 points, and Cale Whitt, who also recorded a double-double, netted 11 points, including 3 of 3 from the charity stripe, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Derek Dixon completed the scoring with 4. Andy Ernat, Logan Potts, Thane Ward, Connor Kavanaugh, Braden Potts, Karson Whitt, and Cody Dotson also logged playing time for the Hornets.

Mercer's Bryer Noe led all scorers with 19, and teammate Hunter Shipley scored 11. PHS went 13 for 24 from the free throw line while the Cardinals made 12 of 18. 

The Hornets next action will come in the KCI Tournament at East Buchanan in Gower where Hamilton is seeded first.
